Handong International ISD · Mediation Center

Where there are people, there are always disputes and conflicts. Since people all have their own thoughts and desires, the existence of conflicts and disputes are considered a normal phenomenon. However, if these disputes and conflicts are not controlled, people would put up emotional walls which would lead to cutting ties with people. Because of this, our society would have to pay a large amount for the cost of conflict. Therefore we need to be able to control and solve the disputes and conflicts that are happening in our society in order to build peace. The Handong International ISD · Mediation Center in Handong Global University was established on May 18th, 2021 to peacefully solve the ongoing disputes and conflicts and promote peace in our world.

Handong International ISD · Mediation Center solves conflicts between people through consultation and arbitration in each of its specialized centers. It studies and educates on how to actively solve disputes through adjustment and mediation. HIAR also runs a clinic in order to solve actual conflicts/disputes and especially tries to look for ways to solve not only domestic disputes but international disputes through voluntary methods. HIAR especially tries to carry out its plan in cultivating mediators and arbitrators to solve conflicts between church members, church disputes, marriage issues of migrant workers and migrant women etc. Also, in order to provide solutions for disputes between governments and investors, international commercial disputes, and other international disputes, HIAR will try to be an institute that performs its role as a think tank and offer creative alternatives through empirical study.

In the future, Handong International ISD · Mediation Center will try to improve the educating programs for cultivating not only internationalized negotiators, but facilitators and arbitrators as well and fulfill its mission in building peace between people as mediators. Furthermore, HIAR will try its best to live up to its name as an education institute that cultivates negotiators, mediators and arbitrators.

We ask for your interest and support. Thank you.

Korea has the world's 10th largest economy and there is much commercial investment for inbound and outbound. As trade and commerce increase in volume and nature, there are also various disputes and they call for an international and national mechanism to resolve the matter of dispute practically, efficiently, and amicably in a relatively short amount of time. The ISD center deals with matters dealing Investor-State Dispute Settlement both nationally and internationally. As we saw in a recent case with Lone Star and the Republic of Korea, the stake of ISDS is high and the State is no longer immune to a private cause of action and there is a need for protecting the interest of investors as well as respecting government’s public interest action based on the principle of free market economy, democracy, and rule of law. The Center will conduct research on ISD cases from a national and comparative law perspective as well as provide the platform for ISD professionals and academics to interact and edify each other in the context of informal and formal settings such as seminars, workshops, training, certificate program, academic program, and publications as reports, journal articles, issue briefing. We look forward to collaborating with all the stakeholders and professionals who would mound the ISD mechanism in a more foreseeable, proficient, reasonable manner so that the outcome of ISD settlement would be fair, nationally, and internationally agreeable.

Warm greetings.
Welcome to Handong Institute for Arbitration and Reconciliation!

It is truly an honor and a joy to see the establishment of HIAR at Handong Global University in Pohang, South Korea. It has never been more timely to open HIAR than at this time.
The use of alternative dispute resolutions has been greatly increasing and has been playing an important role in the international society. More importantly, conflict resolution has been playing an essential role in peacemaking. With the establishment of HIAR, we train and educate students, legal practitioners, and any one interested in conflict resolutions to be peacemakers through the use of arbitration and mediation. We hope that HIAR will be a place where people get trained and be sent out to be peacemakers of the world. We pray and look forward to communities coming together and conflicts being resolved peacefully through HIAR.
We thank you for your support and prayers. All praise and glory to God.
